The Kota district is a historical district, it serves as a reminder of the colonial times of the 16th century, when Kota was the only city located in Batavia and was surrounded by a wall, while villages (campungs), orchards and rice fields were located around. It was in Kota that the Dutch settled and built their city. Old Jakarta - or Batavia, as the Dutch called this area - in the 16th century was a center of trade on the whole continent due to its strategic location (Kota is located on the coast of the Java Sea). And European sailors called Kota "Diamond of Asia" and "Queen of the East." On the outskirts of Kota, there is also the trading port of Jakarta.

The central part of the Cat is Glodok, the business center of Kota. Glodok is also called the Chinese town. This name came from the time of Dutch colonization, since most of the traders in Glodok are Chinese. Today, Glodok is known as one of the largest electronics centers in Jakarta.

In 1972, the Governor of Jakarta issued a decree by which Kota was officially recognized as a place of historical heritage in order to preserve ancient architectural monuments. Unfortunately, some quarters of Kota, where colonial buildings are located, are still abandoned and are gradually being destroyed. In 2007, in order to preserve the ancient Pinto Besar and Pos Kota streets that surround Fatahillah Square, the government decided to ban the passage of vehicles through them.
