Chepina is the most populated village of the Valdisotto ski resort. It is located on the banks of the Adda River and on a mountainside adjacent to other villages - Pedemonte, Pozzallo, Valchepina. There are many modern hotels and apartments for tourists.
Among the attractions of Chepina it is worth highlighting the crypt and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. The first is known for its very elegant wrought iron fence dating from the 8th century - it is one of the most outstanding works of art in all of Alta Valtellina. Carlo Colturi and Giacomo De Gasperi were traditionally considered the authors of the fence, but recent archival finds made by the parish priest suggest that the author of the masterpiece was Giuseppe Pini, and Colturi and De Gasperi were his assistants. The fence with a sleek iron ornament is located between the round arches and faces four small stone columns made by sculptors Giacomo Skena and Filippo Bracca. Other valuable works decorating the crypt are frescoes on the facade, walls and interior arches. They were executed in the 18th century by the master Ligari, Alessandro Valdani and Tommaso Billy. Inside the crypt is a 6th-century marble ark and a bowl of holy water. Gargoyles hanging from the parapet are of particular interest - they were made after the fence and depict the traditional motifs of dragons and fantastic creatures.
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta is located near the cemetery and crypt of the 18th century. It was built in the 14th century, but over the past centuries it was rebuilt several times. The current building was erected in 1856. Above the main entrance you can see the fresco of the late 15th century by Giovannino da Sondalo - it depicts Saints Gervasius and Protasius, and in the center on the arch is the Holy Trinity. Another ancient fresco is located on the southern facade of the church - this is the Madonna and Child with saints. The staircase leading to the covered gallery adjoins the same facade.
Inside the walls of the church were also found fragments of frescoes of the 15th and 16th centuries. The beautiful wooden altarpiece of the 5th century has been preserved. Also inside you can see the statue of the Madonna and Child and statues of saints, a nativity scene, another 6th-century wooden altarpiece and 17th-century Marni paintings depicting saints and angels.
