In the area "Mogilata" were discovered the remains of a Christian complex, built in the 5-7 centuries, there are also found basil and outbuildings.

Region of Smolyan

The name of the city of Smolyan is connected with the history of the city, in these places there lived a Slavic tribe of the so-called "Smolyan". The Settlement was founded in ancient antiquity, having different names: Ah ел Celeb and Ezero and Pa Sh Makli.

After the Bulgarian states came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in 1519, these lands were controlled by the court doctor Ah Ч Celebi, hence one of the names of these lands.

Photo and description

The architectural complex in the Raikovo district and the old houses in Smolyan that make up it are located in the Cheshite quarter, the oldest in the area. Many buildings were built in 1835.

All houses in this quarter are quite interesting and original architectural solutions. For example, the basement is most often part of the courtyard, which, in turn, is surrounded by stone walls. This yard serves for storing firewood and as a shelter for animals. Upstairs there is a staircase with a mandatory roof and it goes from the inside of the house, and the upper floor always stands slightly above the lower one due to the design features.

Widespread here were at one time double "fraternal" houses. These are buildings with two identical parts separated by a wall. They do not have a direct relationship with each other. Such houses, as a rule, were made monumental and representative in order to demonstrate the welfare of their owners. But inside the decoration of the house is rather modest. There are no lush and excessive decorative motifs, there are only carved wooden ceilings and the same handrails on the stairs, cabinets from top to bottom, simple benches, boxes for firewood, shelves.

For example, the Cheshitev house belonged to two brothers and belongs to the end of the 19th century, the name of the builder is unknown. It is made of wood and stone, and its owners were the brothers Todor and Georgy Cheshitev, who were engaged in the manufacture of coarse fabrics from wool. Another interesting home owned by a wealthy merchant is called Chesitev's Million - it can be cited as an example of a single symmetrical architecture. The George House was built in 1873 for the family of one of the artisans. The basement was occupied by a modest workshop with access to the outside, where wool was painted.

In 1984, the house was given to the Smolyan Historical Museum, as a result of which an exhibition was organized here dedicated to Laszlo Nagi, a poet and translator of Hungarian origin. It was this cultural figure who made a huge contribution to the popularization of the history, folklore and customs of this region.

The architectural complex also allows you to get acquainted with another interesting object - the Cheshite Cesme house, which is supplied with water from a nearby source. The building was built around 1870. Local traditions claim that the water in the source is healing.

Short description

Located in a mountain valley surrounded by mixed forests, the city Smolyan enters the eponymous community of the Smolyan region in Bulgaria. From the cold northern winds, the Bulgarian city is saved by the mountain ranges framing Smolyan.

The origin of the city dates back to the 17th century. In those days, the inhabitants of the village of Ezerovo, which lay below the current city, moved to a new place of residence in the mountains. On the picturesque banks of the Black River, they laid three settlements under the names Raikovo, Ustovo and Smolyan. The reason for the move was the oppression of the villagers by the Turkish authorities. In the second half of the 20th century in 1960, the villages were united and formed the city of Smolyan.

The central part of the city began to be built up in the 80s of the 20th century. Rare exhibits are famous for the local history museum. In one of the halls there is an exposition that tells the story of the Thracian tribes inhabiting the territory of the modern city.

Numerous ancient objects were found in the necropolis in the vicinity of the city, in particular swords, chain mail, arrows, ceramic dishes, metal fasteners made of bronze and iron, which are stored in museums. In addition, paintings by local painters are exhibited here. An old church and a planetarium are located on Bulgaria Boulevard.

And the former village of Raikovo began to develop during the national Renaissance of Bulgaria. Many houses of that era were built here, among which one can name Pangalov House (1860), and Alibeyev Konak (1780). Cheshitev House, Sariyev House, Meramov House and Prisadov House are located in Nizhny Raikovo. There are also interesting Rhodopean houses in other areas of the city.

Raikovo has the largest planetarium among all the cities of Bulgaria. In addition, the Srednerodopsky Museum of History is of considerable interest to tourists, which exhibits an exhibition of more than 150 thousand objects. And in the Chinaryt nature reserve you can see a tree whose age exceeds 250 years.

The small town of Smolyan, which is picturesquely stretched along the slopes of the Rhodope Mountains, is famous for its amazingly beautiful nature, clear forest lakes and ski slopes.

The majestic Rhodope Peaks rise immediately beyond the residential areas of Smolyan. Locals can constantly enjoy the amazing beauty of the mountains, covered with a lush green carpet.

Walking in the beautiful surroundings of Smolyan - on bicycles or on foot, alone or in groups - is one of the most popular entertainment for guests of the resort town.

Smolyan is rich in ancient churches and temples, some of which are still active today. The unique architecture makes St. Vissarion Cathedral stand out among typical church buildings.

The small resort town of Smolyan is simply mesmerized by the unique combination of modern buildings with well-preserved architectural examples of the Renaissance.

The houses of the Bulgarian Renaissance are perfectly preserved in Smolyan. Their unique feature can be considered the granite masonry of the basement and the overhanging structure of the second.

From the huge hall of the Devil's Throat, a unique abyss cave in the Trigrad Gorge, you can go outside through an artificial tunnel or through a natural exit in the rock.

The sights of the Ustovo quarter include the houses of Khadzhiivanov, Takov, Sheremetev, Kelyavsky and Hadzhichonov, as well as the Mednikarsk Charshia. And the church of St. Nicholas is distinguished by original architecture and rich painting.

Picturesque nature and excellent conditions for tourism

Culture is well developed in Smolyan: there is a drama theater, as well as a pedagogical faculty of the University of Plovdiv. Here you can see both modern buildings and buildings of past centuries. And the comfort of urban life is combined with the unique cozy atmosphere of the countryside, which prevails in more remote areas of Smolyan. Travelers are attracted by the clean mountain air, as well as panoramic views and excellent conditions for cycling, hiking and mountain hiking.

Ten kilometers from the city are Smolyan Lakes, the deepest and most beautiful of which is Bistroto. The entire area adjacent to them looks like a single park with forests, alleys and clearings. There is even a cable car to the top of Snezhanka (in Pamporovo).

I must say that another beautiful natural park in Bulgaria is located near the river, bearing the same name as the city of Kamchia.
