It’s easy to find the Irkutsk region on the map. This is the largest subject of the Russian Federation, landlocked. What might be interested in this region of a tourist or local historian? What sights of the Irkutsk region should a traveler visit in the first place? This is exactly what our article will tell.
The main attractions of the Irkutsk region: photos, names and descriptions
The region is located in Eastern Siberia 5 thousand km from Moscow and 4 thousand km from Vladivostok. The region occupies a huge area on which all the states of the Balkan Peninsula could be located. The length of the region from north to south is almost one and a half thousand kilometers!
What sights is the Irkutsk region rich in first of all? And what interesting tourist can see here?
Cognitive, recreational, recreational, sports tourism is quite developed in the region. A number of resorts and health resorts operate in the areas of water and salt sources: Angara, Nukut Matsesta, Ust-Kut, Rodnik, Metallurg and others. Business tourism is also actively developing in the region, the core of which is the annual Baikal Economic Forum.
When compiling a list of the main attractions of the Irkutsk region, the photo of Lake Baikal, without a doubt, should be the first number in it. The deepest freshwater reservoir of the planet borders the region from the southeast side. The lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its shores within the region are under the jurisdiction of the Baikal National Park.
It is worth noting that the natural attractions of the Irkutsk region are not at all limited to Baikal alone. In its southern part in the mountainous regions of East Sayan and Khamar-Daban there are many objects that attract the attention of climbers, water and pedestrian tourists. Among them, one can not fail to mention the Baikal-Lensky Nature Reserve, Lake Heart, Sandy Bay, the mysterious Shaman Cape, as well as unique Warm Lakes on the border with Buryatia.
Below is a list of the ten most interesting sights of the Irkutsk region (some of which will be described below):
- Pribaikalsky National Park.
- Skansen "Taltsy".
- Circum-Baikal Railway.
- Bratsk hydroelectric station.
- Island Olkhon.
- Patom crater.
- Lake Heart.
- Clock Museum in Angarsk.
- Mineralogical Museum V.A. Zhigalova.
- Mount Ehe-Erdo.
Under this abbreviation lies a unique railway, which was laid along the shore of Lake Baikal. It was built for a total of fifteen years (from 1901 to 1915) with the participation of the best engineers from Russia, Austria and China. The so-called Krugobaikalka is 94 kilometers of road along rocky cliffs and tunnels, 173 architectural and 583 engineering monuments!
Tourists who conquer the famous Chersky peak in the mountains of Khamar-Daban pass by another interesting natural monument. This is a tiny but incredibly picturesque Lake Heart. The name of the reservoir is by no means accidental. According to their outlines, the shores of the lake really resemble a heart in its classical representation.
In Angarsk is one of the most interesting museums in the Irkutsk region. This is the oldest watch museum in Russia. It was founded back in 1968. The museum features about 500 exhibits - watches from various countries and historical eras. There is also a unique “space clock” - a gift from the outstanding Soviet cosmonaut Georgy Grechko. More than 10 thousand people visit the Clock Museum annually.
In the valley of the Angi River, ten kilometers from the village of Elantsy, an unusual hill Ehe-Erdo rises. The uniqueness of this mountain lies in the fact that it has become a sacred object for representatives of the Buryat people. Here they hold their Erdynsky Games - an old national holiday. The culmination of this event is a grand round dance around the mountain.
Sights of Irkutsk: photos, names and descriptions of objects
And in Irkutsk itself there is something to see. It is no coincidence that in the city center, at the beginning of Litvinov Street, an original monument to a tourist was erected. Therefore, it will not be amiss to tell about the sights of Irkutsk. Photos, names and descriptions of the most interesting of them you will find in this section.
The administrative center of the region is extremely rich in architectural, historical and cultural monuments. In addition, it is here that most of the museums in this region are located. Here is a list of the ten most interesting sites in the city that are worth a visit:
- 130th quarter.

- Epiphany Cathedral.
- Triumphal Arch (Moscow Gate).
- Pedestrian bridge.

While in Irkutsk, it’s a sin not to walk along the 130th quarter, where authentic wooden buildings of the 18th century have been preserved, or along the lower embankment of the Angara, where a huge number of sculptural monuments are installed. One cannot fail to visit the ancient Znamensky Monastery and not pass through the arch of the magnificent Moscow Gate. If you came to Irkutsk with children, you should definitely go to the Experimentarium, after visiting which you can take a fresh look at science.
City `s history
The first mention of the Irkut River dates back to 1647, and its "discoverer" was made by Ivan Pokhabov - Yenisei Cossack and Siberian pioneer. One way or another, the history of the founding of the city remains insufficiently clear and open. Recently, more and more new irrefutable facts and testimonies have opened up that contradict the long-established knowledge about Irkutsk. So, for example, the situation is with the history of the foundation of the prison. For a long time there was an opinion that before its foundation a winter hut was built on Dyachy Ostrov (this building is of a defensive nature of the simplest type). However, according to new documents, the Irkutsk prison did not have a predecessor in the form of a winter hut. And such information inconsistencies appear more and more every time.
The concept of “prison” has several interpretations. The main one indicates the type of fortified structure. The administrative and economic buildings inside it did not have their own defensive system. This function was performed by the fence and towers.
Irkutsk prison was rebuilt many times. According to the notes of the Russian writer S. Maksimov, Irkutsk was previously one of the “favorite” Russian cities. This was evidenced by its favorable geographical location, which favored the development and growth of the settlement. At that time, it was the most important stronghold of the country, in connection with which the city was given increased attention compared to others that had appeared earlier in prison.
A landmark event in the history of Irkutsk was the foundation in 1672 of the Ascension Monastery on the left bank of the Angara. After that, the city gains the status of not only a secular center, but also a church.
Irkutsk Old photo
Until 1682, Irkutsk obeyed the orders of the Yenisei voivode, but soon it turned into the center of an independent county. After 8 years, the city received its own coat of arms and seal. Perestroika continued, and in 1897 Irkutsk became a fairly large (by old standards) settlement.
Ultimately, the Siberian city has become truly large (in terms of territory and population) and a developed center, which largely determined the directions for further development of Siberian lands, the paths of scientific, industrial and socio-economic development of the cities of this region.
If a tourist decides to visit Baikal, then the first thing he will certainly be in Irkutsk. A great option is to delay for a couple of days in the city, explore the surroundings, get acquainted with local attractions, visit cultural institutions.
Every year Irkutsk is gaining more and more popularity as a tourist city. Foreign guests often come here. It is noteworthy that some central streets are equipped with signs in English, Chinese and Japanese.
A very interesting find for tourists, invented by local residents is a green line drawn on the sidewalk and leading to all interesting places in the center of Irkutsk. Such a peculiar excursion route for a walking tour. This excursion "program" includes only 30 attractions, and the total length of the path is 5 km. Each of these places has an information plate. It is curious that the green line is laid in accordance with the rules of the road, in particular, “crosses” the road only in the right place for this — at a traffic light or zebra. The Internet has the opportunity to take a virtual walk along the green line.
The main city streets of the greatest cultural interest are Lenin and Marx.
For a long time, the symbol of Irkutsk is Babr. This word is the Turkic name for a jaguar, tiger or panther. The peoples of Yakutia are called the Babr of Amur tigers. For several centuries, the figure of the beast adorns the coat of arms of the city.
The bronze sculpture, personifying the symbol of Irkutsk in all its power and beauty, appeared in 2012 and was installed in the 130th quarter. The height of the sculpture is 3.5 meters, and the length is 4. It depicts a babr, raised on its hind legs and holding its prey in its teeth - a furry animal.
Count Speransky Square
This is the main square of Irkutsk. It was with her that the history of the city began several centuries ago. It was located behind the Irkutsk Kremlin (which is why it was called the Kremlin) and served as a place of trade and festive events. At the end of the 18th century, the Kremlin was dismantled, and the area was repeatedly renamed. In the early years of the 19th century, the Gostiny Dvor was located here.
Gradually, the area increased its territory, and reached modern sizes by the end of the 19th century. Unfortunately, a serious fire occurred during this period, which destroyed many buildings, and during the years of the USSR the remaining fragments of the architectural composition were lost. In particular, the Tikhvin Church and the Cathedral were destroyed.
Count Speransky Square
Landscaping began in the late 60s. As a result, the city administration building was built here, a fountain, a chapel and a wonderful square appeared. Today, Speransky Square serves as a venue for various events and festivities. For the New Year, the main Christmas tree of Irkutsk is being established here, an ice town of amazing beauty and scale is being built.
130th quarter (Irkutsk Sloboda)
The location of the historical buildings is a suburban quarter of the 18th century. Since in those days, almost all houses and non-residential buildings were built of wood, by the beginning of the 20th century the quarter was like an ordinary village. In 2008, it was decided to create the Irkutsk Sloboda, as a result of which local residents were given new housing in return for the emergency, and the old houses were restored. Now these are no longer ordinary wooden buildings, but real monuments of architecture.
Lower Angara Embankment
Located in the northern part of the historic city center. The history of this place is rooted in the very beginning of the foundation of Irkutsk. Since then, this embankment served as a marina, and then, as the settlement grew, it was built up with residential buildings and other structures. In the 18th century a stone cathedral of the Epiphany appeared here. A large-scale project to restore the oldest embankment of the city was carried out in 2010-2011.

The delicate work of the author of this masterpiece gave the building an “airy” look and unimaginable lightness. The estate is an architectural ensemble, part of the buildings of which were restored in the 2000s. Inside the mansion is a commemorative exhibition in honor of the family of V.P. Sukachev.

The ship was built before the October Revolution and for some time was used in public service. For the first time the ship "set foot" on the water in 1900 - it is one of the oldest icebreakers in the world. At the end of the 20th century, it was decided to turn the ship into a museum. However, at that time the idea was not destined to be realized, since a year later the “Angara” was set on fire. Only in 1990, the icebreaker was repaired and moved to the Irkutsk reservoir.

THEM. Feinberg is a wealthy merchant who lived in Irkutsk at the end of the 19th century and had a very great influence in the city. In 1903, on his orders, a stone mansion was erected. The basis of the building material was sandstone and brick - such an expensive project was available only to very wealthy people. The building was built in the eclectic style. It is noteworthy that Feinberg himself did not live in the mansion, but preferred to rent it out.
Epiphany Cathedral in Irkutsk
The temple was built in the early 18th century. The building is located on the Lower Embankment of Irkutsk. Previously, a wooden church stood on the site of the cathedral, which soon burnt in a fire. The new stone structure was erected at the expense of local residents and visitors. During the Soviet period, inside the church was a factory floor and a dormitory for workers. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the restoration of the Orthodox Cathedral began, which lasted for 19 years. At the end of the restoration work, the building passed into the jurisdiction of the museum of local lore. Today the temple is operational - services in it have resumed since 1994.
Epiphany Cathedral in Irkutsk
The beautifully decorated Orthodox church was built of red brick in the late 19th century. The building is decorated with a picturesque blue-blue roof and a very extraordinary geometric pattern. The whole appearance of the church is somewhat unusual and immediately attracts the attention of an observer. The undeniable architectural value of the building saved the Kazan Church from destruction in the Soviet period. In 1975, the temple was included in the list of state-protected objects.
The construction of the temple dates from the 18th century. The modern building has replaced the old dilapidated wooden structure. Before the Revolution of 1917, the main mission of the church was to bless the travelers who went on a long voyage.
Most of the parishioners were large merchants who often sponsored various research expeditions.
Holy Cross Exaltation Church
A rather unusual building was built in the architectural style of the Siberian Baroque. The Orthodox Church is one of the oldest in the city - the church was erected in the distant 1760 year. In the 19th century, an extension was added to the church in the form of a new chapel. The temple is famous for its many priceless relics: the 18th-century old iconostasis and several hundred images adorn the interior walls of the building.
The building is located in the historical center of Irkutsk on the territory of the Irkutsk Kremlin, which is now not preserved. The church is one of the first stone structures of the city. After the Revolution, the temple was almost demolished, but it was decided to use it as an utility building (it housed a shoe shop, communal apartments). In 1960, the Spasskaya Church received the status of a monument of regional importance.
The temple has a unique rich collection of bells.
Moscow Triumphal Gate
The Arc de Triomphe was built in 1811 in honor of the tenth anniversary of the accession to the throne of Emperor Alexander I. Seals living in Baikal waters are no longer found anywhere in the world, that is, they are endemic to Lake Baikal. If it is not possible to look at these amazing animals in natural conditions, then visiting the nerpinaria is the best option for residents and visitors of the city.
One of the most striking and significant sights of Irkutsk is the river on which the Siberian city was once built. The Angara is the largest tributary of the Yenisei, its length is more than 1700 km.
The river begins with Baikal, and its path runs through the territory of the East Siberian taiga. A mighty water stream flows into the Kara Sea basin - this is the end of the path of a mighty Siberian water stream.
This is truly the brightest and most valuable attraction - not only in Irkutsk, but also throughout our country. This is the deepest lake in the world! The beauty of local nature, the diversity of flora and fauna, the mesmerizing scale of the vast expanses of water turned Lake Baikal into a true legend. It is not surprising that the great lake is awarded with such bright, “human” epithets - “wise”, “gray-haired”, “mighty”. Also among the alternative names of Baikal are especially popular: “the blue eye of Siberia”, “an oasis of the pristine nature of the Earth”, “god-made creation”, “a sacred gift of nature”, etc.
View of Lake Baikal
To come to Irkutsk and not visit the greatest attraction - Lake Baikal - is unforgivable! The nearest shore is located 70 kilometers from the city on the territory of Listvyanka - the main tourist center on the western side of the reservoir.
The countless advantages of this wonderful place do not need to be introduced, because visiting Baikal is a dream for many tourists.
Approximately in this way the very green line for tourists passes, which was discussed at the very beginning.
