It’s easy to find the Irkutsk region on the map. This is the largest subject of the Russian Federation, landlocked. What might be interested in this region of a tourist or local historian? What sights of the Irkutsk region should a traveler visit in the first place? This is exactly what our article will tell.

The main attractions of the Irkutsk region: photos, names and descriptions

The region is located in Eastern Siberia 5 thousand km from Moscow and 4 thousand km from Vladivostok. The region occupies a huge area on which all the states of the Balkan Peninsula could be located. The length of the region from north to south is almost one and a half thousand kilometers!

What sights is the Irkutsk region rich in first of all? And what interesting tourist can see here?

Cognitive, recreational, recreational, sports tourism is quite developed in the region. A number of resorts and health resorts operate in the areas of water and salt sources: Angara, Nukut Matsesta, Ust-Kut, Rodnik, Metallurg and others. Business tourism is also actively developing in the region, the core of which is the annual Baikal Economic Forum.

When compiling a list of the main attractions of the Irkutsk region, the photo of Lake Baikal, without a doubt, should be the first number in it. The deepest freshwater reservoir of the planet borders the region from the southeast side. The lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its shores within the region are under the jurisdiction of the Baikal National Park.

It is worth noting that the natural attractions of the Irkutsk region are not at all limited to Baikal alone. In its southern part in the mountainous regions of East Sayan and Khamar-Daban there are many objects that attract the attention of climbers, water and pedestrian tourists. Among them, one can not fail to mention the Baikal-Lensky Nature Reserve, Lake Heart, Sandy Bay, the mysterious Shaman Cape, as well as unique Warm Lakes on the border with Buryatia.

Below is a list of the ten most interesting sights of the Irkutsk region (some of which will be described below):

  1. Pribaikalsky National Park.
  2. Skansen "Taltsy".
  3. Circum-Baikal Railway.
  4. Bratsk hydroelectric station.
  5. Island Olkhon.
  6. Patom crater.
  7. Lake Heart.
  8. Clock Museum in Angarsk.

  10. Mount Ehe-Erdo.

Under this abbreviation lies a unique railway, which was laid along the shore of Lake Baikal. It was built for a total of fifteen years (from 1901 to 1915) with the participation of the best engineers from Russia, Austria and China. The so-called Krugobaikalka is 94 kilometers of road along rocky cliffs and tunnels, 173 architectural and 583 engineering monuments!

Heart Lake

Tourists who conquer the famous Chersky peak in the mountains of Khamar-Daban pass by another interesting natural monument. This is a tiny but incredibly picturesque Lake Heart. The name of the reservoir is by no means accidental. According to their outlines, the shores of the lake really resemble a heart in its classical representation.

Clock Museum

In Angarsk is one of the most interesting museums in the Irkutsk region. This is the oldest watch museum in Russia. It was founded back in 1968. The museum features about 500 exhibits - watches from various countries and historical eras. There is also a unique “space clock” - a gift from the outstanding Soviet cosmonaut Georgy Grechko. More than 10 thousand people visit the Clock Museum annually.

Mount Ehe-Erdo

In the valley of the Angi River, ten kilometers from the village of Elantsy, an unusual hill Ehe-Erdo rises. The uniqueness of this mountain lies in the fact that it has become a sacred object for representatives of the Buryat people. Here they hold their Erdynsky Games - an old national holiday. The culmination of this event is a grand round dance around the mountain.

Sights of Irkutsk: photos, names and descriptions of objects

And in Irkutsk itself there is something to see. It is no coincidence that in the city center, at the beginning of Litvinov Street, an original monument to a tourist was erected. Therefore, it will not be amiss to tell about the sights of Irkutsk. Photos, names and descriptions of the most interesting of them you will find in this section.

The administrative center of the region is extremely rich in architectural, historical and cultural monuments. In addition, it is here that most of the museums in this region are located. Here is a list of the ten most interesting sites in the city that are worth a visit:

  1. 130th quarter.
  2. Lower embankment.
  3. Znamensky monastery.
  4. Epiphany Cathedral.
  5. Triumphal Arch (Moscow Gate).
  6. Pedestrian bridge.
  7. House of the merchant Vtorov.
  8. Fainberg Manor.
  9. Museum-icebreaker "Angara".
  10. Museum of entertaining sciences "Experimentarium".

While in Irkutsk, it’s a sin not to walk along the 130th quarter, where authentic wooden buildings of the 18th century have been preserved, or along the lower embankment of the Angara, where a huge number of sculptural monuments are installed. One cannot fail to visit the ancient Znamensky Monastery and not pass through the arch of the magnificent Moscow Gate. If you came to Irkutsk with children, you should definitely go to the Experimentarium, after visiting which you can take a fresh look at science.

City `s history

The first mention of the Irkut River dates back to 1647, and its "discoverer" was made by Ivan Pokhabov - Yenisei Cossack and Siberian pioneer. One way or another, the history of the founding of the city remains insufficiently clear and open. Recently, more and more new irrefutable facts and testimonies have opened up that contradict the long-established knowledge about Irkutsk. So, for example, the situation is with the history of the foundation of the prison. For a long time there was an opinion that before its foundation a winter hut was built on Dyachy Ostrov (this building is of a defensive nature of the simplest type). However, according to new documents, the Irkutsk prison did not have a predecessor in the form of a winter hut. And such information inconsistencies appear more and more every time.

The concept of “prison” has several interpretations. The main one indicates the type of fortified structure. The administrative and economic buildings inside it did not have their own defensive system. This function was performed by the fence and towers.

Irkutsk prison was rebuilt many times. According to the notes of the Russian writer S. Maksimov, Irkutsk was previously one of the “favorite” Russian cities. This was evidenced by its favorable geographical location, which favored the development and growth of the settlement. At that time, it was the most important stronghold of the country, in connection with which the city was given increased attention compared to others that had appeared earlier in prison.
A landmark event in the history of Irkutsk was the foundation in 1672 of the Ascension Monastery on the left bank of the Angara. After that, the city gains the status of not only a secular center, but also a church.

Irkutsk Old photo

Until 1682, Irkutsk obeyed the orders of the Yenisei voivode, but soon it turned into the center of an independent county. After 8 years, the city received its own coat of arms and seal. Perestroika continued, and in 1897 Irkutsk became a fairly large (by old standards) settlement.

Ultimately, the Siberian city has become truly large (in terms of territory and population) and a developed center, which largely determined the directions for further development of Siberian lands, the paths of scientific, industrial and socio-economic development of the cities of this region.

Sights

If a tourist decides to visit Baikal, then the first thing he will certainly be in Irkutsk. A great option is to delay for a couple of days in the city, explore the surroundings, get acquainted with local attractions, visit cultural institutions.

Every year Irkutsk is gaining more and more popularity as a tourist city. Foreign guests often come here. It is noteworthy that some central streets are equipped with signs in English, Chinese and Japanese.

A very interesting find for tourists, invented by local residents is a green line drawn on the sidewalk and leading to all interesting places in the center of Irkutsk. Such a peculiar excursion route for a walking tour. This excursion "program" includes only 30 attractions, and the total length of the path is 5 km. Each of these places has an information plate. It is curious that the green line is laid in accordance with the rules of the road, in particular, “crosses” the road only in the right place for this — at a traffic light or zebra. The Internet has the opportunity to take a virtual walk along the green line.

The main city streets of the greatest cultural interest are Lenin and Marx.

For a long time, the symbol of Irkutsk is Babr. This word is the Turkic name for a jaguar, tiger or panther. The peoples of Yakutia are called the Babr of Amur tigers. For several centuries, the figure of the beast adorns the coat of arms of the city.

The bronze sculpture, personifying the symbol of Irkutsk in all its power and beauty, appeared in 2012 and was installed in the 130th quarter. The height of the sculpture is 3.5 meters, and the length is 4. It depicts a babr, raised on its hind legs and holding its prey in its teeth - a furry animal.

Count Speransky Square

This is the main square of Irkutsk. It was with her that the history of the city began several centuries ago. It was located behind the Irkutsk Kremlin (which is why it was called the Kremlin) and served as a place of trade and festive events. At the end of the 18th century, the Kremlin was dismantled, and the area was repeatedly renamed. In the early years of the 19th century, the Gostiny Dvor was located here.

Gradually, the area increased its territory, and reached modern sizes by the end of the 19th century. Unfortunately, a serious fire occurred during this period, which destroyed many buildings, and during the years of the USSR the remaining fragments of the architectural composition were lost. In particular, the Tikhvin Church and the Cathedral were destroyed.

Count Speransky Square

Landscaping began in the late 60s. As a result, the city administration building was built here, a fountain, a chapel and a wonderful square appeared. Today, Speransky Square serves as a venue for various events and festivities. For the New Year, the main Christmas tree of Irkutsk is being established here, an ice town of amazing beauty and scale is being built.

130th quarter (Irkutsk Sloboda)

The location of the historical buildings is a suburban quarter of the 18th century. Since in those days, almost all houses and non-residential buildings were built of wood, by the beginning of the 20th century the quarter was like an ordinary village. In 2008, it was decided to create the Irkutsk Sloboda, as a result of which local residents were given new housing in return for the emergency, and the old houses were restored. Now these are no longer ordinary wooden buildings, but real monuments of architecture.

Lower Angara Embankment

Located in the northern part of the historic city center. The history of this place is rooted in the very beginning of the foundation of Irkutsk. Since then, this embankment served as a marina, and then, as the settlement grew, it was built up with residential buildings and other structures. In the 18th century a stone cathedral of the Epiphany appeared here. A large-scale project to restore the oldest embankment of the city was carried out in 2010-2011.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the restoration of the Orthodox Cathedral began, which lasted for 19 years. At the end of the restoration work, the building passed into the jurisdiction of the museum of local lore. Today the temple is operational - services in it have resumed since 1994.
