Atami city built on the remains of a volcano crater. A few eras ago, the impressive Atami hills formed one side of the volcano, the other side of it facing the sea. Thanks to such a geological history, there are many hot springs along the coast, and in harmony with beautiful views of the sea, the region is an ideal place for resorts.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established the Tokugawa shogunate, which is known in the history of Japan as the Edo period (1603-1868), was very fond of the Atami onsen resort, on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula, not far from Mount Fuji, a sacred place for every Japanese. For many years, located about two hours from Tokyo, Atami was considered a privileged resort. And it is known as a resort since the eighth century, and is included in the category of "Three Big Onsen of Japan" (Sandyonsen).

Translated from the Japanese language, “Atami” means “hot sea”, a name derived from a folk legend. In the old days, local fishermen were very concerned about a geyser that erupted into the sea and killed many lives, flora and fauna. They turned to a Buddhist monk for help, so that he would pray to the gods on their behalf to help solve the problem. Prayers were heard, and a geyser from the sea miraculously moved to the beach, thus, marine life was saved, and Atami was blessed with a hot spring. Tokugawa Ieyasu, fascinated by the quality of the water, brought her in barrels to the castle in Edo.

In modern days, the city has an excellently developed tourist infrastructure, a lot of modern high-rise hotels, few outwardly distinguishable from each other. Also ryokan (traditional Japanese hotels), seafood restaurants, patinko halls, souvenir shops, the rather big quarter of Hanamati (the geisha area), stretching along the narrow, winding streets that braid the steep mountain slopes around Sagami Bay. The resort during the year, especially in the summer season, attracts at least 2.5 million tourists.

Atami is a meeting place for political leaders to address important government challenges following the Meiji Restoration. Many famous writers of Japan, visiting the resort, described it in their works, which further increased its fame. Among them is a particularly famous novel, a bestseller in the Meiji era, “Konjiki Yasya” (Pawnbroker or Golden Demon) of the popular Japanese writer Ozaki Koyo (1868-1903).

The museum retains more than 3,500 ancient works of Japanese, Chinese, and other Asian countries of art.

You can get to the museum by cable car from the city center. As elsewhere in Japan, access to sex museums is limited by age, after eighteen years. Perhaps the tour of Atami will be incomplete if you do not see the sculptural composition Omiya and Kan-iti in the north of "Sunny Beach". The story of tragic love described in Ojaki Koyo’s Konjiki Yasya. The scene is Atami. Kan-ichi, a university student, learns that his beloved Omiya, in a very difficult situation, accepts a marriage proposal from the son of a wealthy banker who gives her a large diamond ring. Kan-iti, unable to restrain her anger and resentment, kicks the girl with her foot and shouts “You are blinded by a diamond!” The phrase “Diamond no mega chickens!” Became, after reading the book, a hit across the country and today it is often quoted, even those Japanese who did not read the novel. She found embodiment in the popular sculpture in Atami. To the right of the sculpture is Omiya pine. The tree, which was called Omiya pine, was damaged by a typhoon and sawn for a long time, and today a new pine has grown on the roots of the tree.

The climate in Atami is mild: short winters and not too hot summers (average January temperature is + 3 ° Сand in August - +26 ° C) Atami is similar in climatic conditions to resorts such as Batumi and Sochi.

The peak of the season in Atami falls in the summer months (July - August), however, you can visit the city at any time of the year due to the huge number of hot springs and the incredible variety of seafood dishes.

Atami city grew on the remains of a volcano crater. Hundreds of years ago, the Atami green hills formed the base of a volcano partially drowning in the sea. The natural temperature of water in Atami springs sometimes exceeds +90 ° C, and in its composition a lot of calcium, sodium and sulfate salt.

Of course, first of all, this resort is famous for its hot springs and numerous onsen. However, there are other attractions in Atami that attract tourists here.

Red vending machines are of an intracity scale; you can pay for the time on such a phone using coins of 10 yen. Yellow and blue pay phones are long-distance, they also accept coins. International machines of gray and green colors work on special cards that can be purchased at any hotel.

When planning your trip to Japan, keep in mind that mobile communications are of the third generation there. Perhaps your phone will not be able to receive a signal there, so the question of roaming will disappear by itself. In Japan, such cases are provided, so tourists rent both telephones and local SIM cards.

Atami has a huge number of Internet cafes where you can get not just access to the World Wide Web, but also a great service. Some Internet cafes surprise their visitors with almost a restaurant menu, massage chairs and much more.

Despite the fact that Atami is considered a very calm city, tourists should not forget about the basic safety rules. First of all, be careful when crossing the roadway - in Japan, left-hand traffic. Therefore, turning your head in search of danger, remember that here everything is the other way around - first to the right, then to the left.

In public places, keep a close eye on your personal belongings. Try not to carry valuables with you - hotels always have safes. During the tour, follow the guide and do not fend off the group. In no case do not go to remote areas of the city without a local escort or guide.

Business climate

The state owns only the mint, all other industries are in private hands. In all areas, small and large businesses coexist very successfully. So, for example, in the transport sector, small enterprises are engaged in transportation, while large ones own entire taxi fleets. Often, small enterprises act as contractors for large corporations.

In the small business, the restaurant business is the most attractive for the Japanese. Often there is a case that is passed on among family members from generation to generation. This, for example, sewing a kimono, making silk fabrics, the production of mats and tatami.

The property

Few foreigners can buy property in Japan. This is due to both price and legal restrictions.

The housing price is high due to the excellent quality of building materials, the use of modern technologies and limited land resources.

And Japanese laws do not allow many foreign investors to obtain visas, not to mention citizenship.

Nevertheless, you can become the owner of Japanese real estate if you have a share in the business there or are constantly working.

The cost of one square meter in an apartment in Atami is close to that in Tokyo - $ 7,000. The cost of private houses up to 100 m 2 with a small plot can reach $ 600,000.

The Japanese themselves prefer two- and three-room apartments near the center or small houses with plots, but already far from the bustle of the city.
